Consulting is all about communication. The great advantage of meeting clients face-to-face is that you can visually check that your understanding of a task is exactly the same as a client's. Our Microsoft Excel specialists are able to support you remotely. This is necessary because the great skill of e-consulting is in understanding client requirements in the absence of any visual cues. The primary method for doing this is to use the telephone.

At Excel4Business, we often find ourselves developing completely new spreadsheets for clients. Not only are the sheets new; they may also include features that clients have never seen before, such as forms. If you've seen an Excel form, you will know that it's essentially like a form on a website. It exists to help a user enter data in an acceptable format.

If you haven't seen an Excel form, then discussing forms would be very conceptual. If we decided to solve your problem using a form, you would probably be delighted when you received the end product as it's generally impressive to see a new function for the first time. However, you would perhaps have found it reassuring to see an example of a form before finalizing the project scope.

A picture is worth 1000 words, and that's why we use screen sharing technology with clients. It makes everything a lot clearer. It can also be essential if clients are using proprietary software or data connections on site. Last but not least, it is the only way in whcih our experts can deliver on-screen training and support.

Mikogo

Our screen sharing software of choice is Mikogo. Unlike GotoMeeting and WebEx, the software is free for a consulting firm like ourselves. There are limitations on the free version of their service, but only that you cannot have more than 20 individuals on a single call. This has never limited our ability to provide an effective service.

Our main requirement for screen sharing software is the ability to set up sessions instantly whilst on the phone to a client. With Mikogo, you simply select to Start a Session. You are then allocated a pin that a user can enter at join.mikogo.com to join the session. It's worth noting that the software required to join a session does not require the user to be an administrator of their workstation.

Another key feature of Mikogo is that you can give anyone presenting rights, and you can give anyone control of the mouse. Sometimes we want to demonstrate spreadsheets at our end, sometimes we want guide a client at their end, sometimes a client needs to find and share their own spreadsheet. It has the required versatility.

Although we set up meetings with Mikogo, our consultants have used GotoMeeting and WebEx where the facilities have been provided by the client. With the rise of teleworking, screen sharing technology is moving forwards quickly and all the major providers are easy to use.
